More about Maggie

Maggie
Name:Maggie
Location:Palau Banyak, Indonesia
About me / us:Inspired by British naturalist and writer Gerald Durrell, I started my career at the Durrell Wildlife Conservation trust in Jersey, where I worked as a mammal keeper; looking after primates, bears and bats. I then traded my captive management experience for field work and started to work as a research assistant with sea turtles on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. In the years to follow I worked as research coordinator and project coordinator for a British organisation in Costa Rica’s poorer neighbour Nicaragua, and helped set up management plans and sea turtle projects in 3 protected nature reserves in the Northwest of the country. In Indonesia I helped create the only sea turtle conservation and monitoring programme in Sumatra. This is where I currently work, in close collaboration with the local community of Pulau Banyak, to protect the turtles nesting and foraging in the archipelago. My work towards sea turtle conservation was awarded by the prestigious, internationally acknowledged Future for Nature award in 2009. I am co-founder and programme manager of the organisation. We are currently still the only active sea turtle conservation and monitoring programme in Sumatra.
Why 1%MEMBER:To promote a local initiative of community members of the offshore islands of Pulau Banyak, Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia and to ensure that small projects such as these can be more successful than programmes run by large international organisations. Less is more!
